Around 160 fish species from tropical and Mediterranean seas housed at the Qawra aquarium

Nine sharks join the national aquarium

The Malta National Aquarium team, headed by the curator Daniel De Castro, brought to Malta nine sharks namely horn shark, banded hound shark, zebra shark and brown banded bamboo shark.

In a statement, the Malta National Aquarium said it had been working restlessly to improve the fish exhibits housed in its 26 tanks that now went up to around 160 fish species from Tropical and Mediterranean seas.

“With the introduction of these new species the Malta National Aquarium is working hard to increase the awareness towards conservation and to keep avoiding the stigma these animals have,” the entity said.

“The Malta National Aquarium is working hard with local NGOs whose work focuses on the protection of animals to educate the general public and stop the fast decline of sharks. We have to keep in mind that if we destroy the shark species we will be unbalancing the entire ecosystem.”

On 10 January, the Malta National Aquarium in collaboration with Sharklab Malta will be releasing 40 Small Spotted Cat Sharks that were born at the Malta National Aquarium.

“We want to clarify that these sharks are harmless to humans,” the MNA said. “Another interesting experience one has when visiting the Aquarium is the historical artifacts one can see around him like a replica of the HMS Stubborn found outside Qawra point or the Blenheim Bomber which is found outside Marsaxlokk.”

For the festive season the Malta National Aquarium has introduced a Christmas bakery, a number of kids activities and a selection of festive menus in our food outlets.
