14,000 tonnes of waste cleaned up last year

Infrastructure Minister says that Cleansing Directorate cleaned up 33% more waste from public and industrial zones tin 2014 han it had in 2013.

The Cleansing Directorate cleaned up 14,000 tonnes of waste from public and industrial zones, Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi announced.

“This is an increase of 33% when compared with 2013, an increase in efficiency due to reforms in human resources, particularly in touristic zones, and a €300,000 investment in specialised cleaning machinery.”

Speaking at a clean-up activity organized by the Floriana Local Council, Mizzi criticised litterers who are “not conscious of their responsibilities”.

“Some places are often littered a week after being cleaned up,” Mizzi said. “If people were to grow more conscious of their responsibilities, the Cleansing Directorate’s cleaning expenses could be used on other government projects instead.”
