Construction waste: government to seek measures against illegal dumping

Environment Minister says necessary steps will be taken to address the lack of space for construction waste

Environment Minister José Herrera has said that all measures permitted by law should be taken to address the illegal dumping of construction waste.

Herrera issued a statement on Saturday afternoon, arguing that he had received several complaints on the lack of quarries where construction waste can be dumped.

Herrera argued that even though the industry is a private one, not controlled by the state, the government should still take the necessary steps which would allow that construction industry to continue functioning, without resulting in illegal dumping.

According to the statement by the Environment Ministry, Herrera said that all measures permitted by law should be taken to address the situation.

“The competent authority has the duty to ensure that the country is served with required infrastructure,” Herrera said, adding that an agreement should be reached with the operators in the coming days.

An agreement, the ministry said, would avoid the need to take ulterior steps.
