Camping on Comino will be restricted to a new official campsite that will be created over the coming months, the Environment Ministry said.

The campsite will be located in the area known as Tal-Ful and works are expected to end in May.

The ministry said that camping in Comino will only be allowed on this site, which will be operated by Ambjent Malta, a government agency.

The creation of a campsite is in line with the management plan for Comino drafted by the Environment and Resources Authority.

The ministry said works on the campsite will start in the coming weeks and include cleaning and floor levelling, installation of containers for the disposal of waste and indigenous tree planting.

Regeneration and rehabilitation works will also commence in the important ecological area near Santa Maria Bay.

“For many years, irresponsible actions took place in this area which led to serious environmental damage… as a nation we need to recognise the fact that while it is important to enjoy nature through various activities, such activities must be carried out with more responsibility and with the least possible ecological impact,” Environment Minister Jose Herrera said.
