Baked mozzarella sticks

Everybody loves melted cheese and deep-fried mozzarella bites are nothing short of delicious. To make these snacks a little healthier, Sean Gravina puts them in the oven instead of the deep-frier and serves them with a homemade tomato sauce. 

Baked mozzarella sticks


  • 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Dry mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Tomato sauce


  1. Preheat oven to 200°C.
  2. Heat a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the panko to pan, and cook for 2 mins or until toasted, stirring frequently. Remove from heat, and place the panko in a shallow dish.
  3. Cut mozzarella into sticks.
  4. Working with one piece at a time, dip cheese in egg and dredge in panko.
  5. Place cheese on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray.
  6. Bake for 3 minutes or until the cheese is softened and thoroughly heated.
  7. Serve with heated tomato sauce.
