A 43-year-old man from Żurrieq was arraigned in court after allegedly being found in possession of 30g of cocaine in an area situated within 100m of a school or place regularly frequented by young people.

The police charged the man with drug-related offences, which are considered aggravated due to the proximity of the location to a school, club or similar youth gathering area. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and requested release on bail.

The prosecution objected to the request, citing fears of possible tampering with evidence and interference with witnesses.

It was alleged in court the accused had already attempted to damage the garage door of one of the civilian witnesses involved in the case.

The defence argued all relevant evidence was already in the possession of the police and maintained that any concerns regarding the witness could be addressed through the imposition of a protection order. Defence lawyers also informed the court the accused had acknowledged having a problem and was willing to seek professional help.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit, upheld the defence’s request for bail. The accused was released against a €5,000 cash deposit and a €15,000 personal guarantee.

In addition to bail conditions, the court issued a protection order in favour of the victim, imposed a treatment order, and placed the accused under a temporary supervision order.

The prosecution was led by Inspector Warren Galea, together with lawyer Julian Scicluna on behalf of the Attorney General.

The accused was represented by lawyers Alfred Abela and René Darmanin.
