Drug addict jailed for string of hotel thefts

23-year-old with coloured criminal record imprisoned for 19 months after admitting to stealing cash, mobile phonefrom hotel guests

A 23-year-old man from Hamrun has been jailed for 19 months after admitting to stealing from three hotel guests staying at San Antonio Hotel in St Paul’s Bay.

The court heard how the accused, Wayne Catania, committed the three thefts in a space of nine days.

The accused, who has a drug problem, pleaded guilty to stealing over €320 in cash, a mobile phone, and of relapsing and breaching a probation order.

Taking into account Catania’s criminal record – which amongst other includes charges of simple and aggravated possession of heroin – Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras sentenced him to 19 months in prison.

The court also ordered that the man be given the necessary help to rehabilitate.
