The victim was certified dead on the spot. Guzeppi Vella, 61, was also seated on the bench and was taken to Mater Dei for treatment for his injuries. He is described as being in critical condition and is in danger of losing his life.

The driver was a 17-year-old youth from Naxxar who was not licensed to drive. He too sustained injuries and was taken to hospital. The car involved in the incident was a Toyota Tercel.

An inquiry has been launched.
