Experts waiting for more tests to confirm cause of Polish girl’s death

Pathologists awaiting medical test results before releasing body of 18-year-old found dead in hotel room, for burial in her native Poland.

Court appointed pathologists are still waiting for medical tests on the body of 18-year-old Isabela Kinga Poniedzialek, the Polish girl believed to have died of natural causes in her hotel room on Tuesday, before authorising the return of the body for burial.

Mater Dei Hospital sources told MaltaToday that the first results from the autopsy on Poniedzialek had shown a clotting that had caused an infection inside the girl’s stomach. Scene of the crime officers found Poniedzialek had a bloated abdomen when she was found dead, and medical experts believe the girl suffered from serious constipation problems.

The girl was said to have complained of stomach pain but that she refused to be taken to hospital.

Poniedzialek was in Malta to further her tourism studies in catering, where she took up accommodation in Sliema’s Plevna Hotel with two other students.

She was found dead Tuesday morning after her colleagues did not see her down for breakfast. The witnesses said that they knocked several times on her door, and that it had to be a group leader to enter the hotel room through a neighbouring balcony.

The witness found her on the floor with her back to the door of the room. They administered her First Aid through CPR, but the girl was certified dead by the medics that arrived on the scene.

Police investigations are being led by Inspector Jonathan Ransley together with Sliema district sergeant David Sant. Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit is leading the inquiry with the assistance of forensic expert Mario Scerri.
