Somali migrant handed suspended jail term for absconding to Denmark

17-year-old youth handed six-month jail term suspended for two years after admitting to absconding to Denmark in November 2013.

A 17-year-old Somali migrant, residing in Fgura was this morning, handed a six-month jail term suspended for two years after he pleaded guilty to absconding from Malta to Denmark last year.

Informed sources explained that the accused – whose name cannot be published because he is a minor – used a counterfeit passport and other false documentation to board a plane to Denmark.

Upon arriving in Denmark, the accused is said to have torn up his passport and other documents, prompting Danish immigration officials to interrogate the youth.

Despite being reticent about his departure point, the accused’s fingerprints matched Maltese immigration records and he was consequently brought to Malta and arrested.

Taking into account the accused’s guilty plea and age, Magistrate Francesco Depasquale handed the youth a six-month jail term suspended for two years and warned him about his future conduct.

Inspector Darren Buhagiar represented the accused, while Lawyer Yana Micallef Stafrace was legal aid.
