Woman admits to stealing €550 in cash from victim's home

30-year-old woman who was invited for a drink by an elderly woman admits to robbing victim of €550 in cash.

A 30-year-old woman who was invited for a drink by an elderly woman robbed her victim out of €550 in cash before running off, a court heard today.

This was heard this afternoon during the arraignment of Miriam Caruana, 30, of Valletta. Caruana was charged with robbing Teresa Grech, of handling stolen property, and of relapsing.

She pleaded guilty to the charges.

Sources close to the investigation said the incident occurred in September, when the accused was invited for a cup of tea at the woman’s home. Informed sources explained that upon entering in her victim’s home, the accused spotted an envelope on the kitchen table, and then stole it before running away.

The envelope contained €550 in cash.

Standing before Magistrate Doreen Clarke, the accused admitted to the charges. The magistrate, however, ordered a probation officer to compile a pre-sentencing report, and granted her bail against a personal guarantee of €1,000 pending judgement.

Police Inspectors Johann Fenech and Kevin Pulis prosecuted, while Lawyer Martin Fenech was defence counsel.
