Woman who stole €700 from employer given probation, community service

Victim says amount stolen has since been mostly reimbursed, says incident is 'closed chapter'

A court has placed a woman on probation and ordered to perform community service after she admitted to stealing cash from her employer in St. Julian’s last May.

34-year-old Natasha Falzon pleaded guilty to charges of theft from her place of work in Portomaso amounting to around €700  before magistrate Aaron Bugeja. She was also found guilty of being a repeat offender.

The court noted the suggestions contained in a report presented by probation officer Marianne Zammit, in which she proposed placing the accused under a supervision order as well as ordering her to perform community service.

For his part, the victim informed the court that Falzon had reimbursed him with the larger part of the amount stolen, describing the incident as a “closed chapter”.

In sentencing the accused, the magistrate took into account the suggestions as well as Falzon’s early guilty plea and her cooperation with the police. He placed the woman on probation for a year and ordered her to perform community work “to ensure she repaid her debt to society”.

Police Inspector Trevor Micallef prosecuted.
