An internal investigation has been launched after two police officers were photographed at the airport absorbed in their mobile phones.

Although it is unclear whether the use of the phones was related to their guarding duty at the Malta International Airport, a spokesperson for the Home Affairs Minister confirmed that the police were investigating the case.

Photos of the two officers were uploaded on Facebook by an Italian national. The photos were allegedly taken on Easter Sunday.

“The Ministry for Home Affairs will be following the current police internal investigation and, if it transpires that what they were doing was not for duty purposes, disciplinary action should be taken by the Police,” a spokesperson for the ministry said.

Although the government is unaware of any terror threats against Malta, security at the airport and seaports has been raised.
