Briton jailed for attempting to choke dog, threatening partner

39-year-old Briton released on bail just two months ago jailed for 18 months after pleading guilty to harming animal and threatening partner

A Briton who was released on bail just two months ago was back in the dock today after threatening his partner and attempting to choke her dog.

Standing before Magistrate Ian Farrugia, the accused, Gary John Peat,  39, was arraigned under arrest and charged with threatening his partner and causing her fear of violence, of causing over €250 worth of damage to her property, and of causing unnecessary pain to an animal.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charges.

Peat, who refused to be assisted by legal aid lawyer Mark Mifsud Cutajar, also admitted breaching probation and bail conditions, and to being drunk.

In his judgment, Magistrate Ian Farrugia noted that notwithstanding the accused’s cooperation with the police and early admission, his crimes merited a prison sentence. The Court therefore handed the accused an 18-month imprisonment term.

Police Inspector Godwin Scerri prosecuted.
