A 20-year-old man from Libya, has been conditionally discharged and allowed six months to pay for repairs to a car, whose windscreen he smashed with a rock, while extremely drunk.

The incident took place at around 5:00am on 27 October on St George’s Street, Paceville. Inspector Matthew Spagnol explained to Magistrate Charmaine Galea how the accused had been in a highly intoxicated state when he had come across the Mitsubishi, parked in an alley off the street in question.

For reasons which were not speculated upon in court, the accused had then proceeded to pick up large stones that he found in the area and used them to shatter the vehicle's windscreen. The car's unfortunate owner had filed a report with the police the next day. Officers later successfully identified the accused through CCTV footage.

The rock-wielding drunkard, Zubair Fathi Mohamed Ramada, pleaded guilty to charges of voluntary damaging a vehicle this afternoon.

Lawyer Noel Bartolo, who was appointed as legal aid to the accused, told the court that Ramada was very sorry for what he had done and had learnt his lesson. Ramada asked that he be allowed to pay for the damage over a span of six months, because he did not have the money at hand.

He was ordered to pay for the €623 repair job in installments, over a six month period.

The court also conditionally discharged the man for two years.
