Three football players suffered injuries during a fight that took place on the Mosta football ground on Triq Valletta yesterday.

According to the police, a fight among the footballers broke out at about 9:40pm between two players on opposing teams, Swieqi United and Gżira United. The fight then escalated as other players intervened.

As the fight ensued, a 20-year-old, of Swieqi, was punched by another 20-year-old, of Sliema, being grievously injured. The injured youth then sought medical treatment at the Mosta clinic.

The police added that two other players, an 18-year-old, of Birkirkara, and a 19-year-old of Naxxar, were also slightly injured in the incident.

Gżira United Football Club condemns all kinds of violence

In a statement, the Gżira United Football Club said it condemned all kinds of violence. Therefore, it added, it would be leaving it up to the police and the sports authorities to justly assess the events and what led to it, as well as what steps to be taken “for football to remain a sport and not become a fighting arena.”
