A 60-year-old man from Valletta died this morning in hospital after an accident on a shooting range, in which the firearm he was using developed a technical problem.

Police said that at 11am they were called to a shooting range in Handaq, on the outskirts of Qormi, where they found the man had been hit by a bullet from his own firearm because of ‘technical problems’.

An ambulance was called on site to transport the man to Mater Dei Hospital, where the man was later certified to have died.

Contacted by the MaltaToday, a range representative confirmed that the firearm was a handgun, but was unable to give further details about the incident. "I'm still in shock," he said.

The duty magistrate has launched an inquiry into the man’s death and appointed a number of experts to assist.

Police investigations are continuing.
