A Libyan man who knifed six people in a Paceville stabbing spree back in 2015 has been jailed for 12 and a half years and ordered to pay €22,000 in expenses.

Zebbug resident Ehab Zorgani, 26, was charged with counts of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm and using a sharp instrument after he allegedly ran amok in Paceville early one Sunday morning in September 2015, stabbing six passers-by.

It took less than a month for a court of magistrates to rule that the man was to be indicted for the crimes.

Back in 2015, the prosecuting inspector had told that court how on 13 September police had reacted to a report of a heated argument. Officers arriving at the scene had noticed that several people were already injured. Witnesses told police that an Arabic-looking man wearing a white shirt and a silver choker had been stabbing people.

Police patrols found Zorgani hiding at the entrance of a nearby gym and identified him from the choker. A bloodstained penknife was found inside a plastic cup in a nearby dustbin.

Court sources say that he was found guilty by the Criminal Court upon his own admission, which is understood to have been made as part of a plea bargain.

Zorgani faced a trial by jury and the possibility of spending over 30 years in jail had he not admitted.

In the light of his admission, the Criminal Court sentenced him to 12 and a half years in prison and ordered him to pay €22,000 in court expenses.

Lawyer Marc Sant was defence counsel.

Inspector Saviour Baldacchino prosecuted.
