WATCH | Roberta Metsola’s new year message: ‘A fairer, simpler, more agile Europe’
In new year message, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola calls for leaner, reformed EU to enable businesses to prosper, while ensuring affordable housing and quality jobs remain accessible to all
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola called for a union that prioritises economic prosperity, social solidarity, and the removal of bureaucratic hurdles.
Addressing Europeans ahead of the start of 2026, Metsola said the European Union must move forward with “hope rather than false nostalgia”, focusing on a reformed bloc that delivers tangible results for families and businesses.
Metsola outlined her vision of a Europe that “bursts bureaucratic bubbles” to allow for greater competition and growth. She highlighted the necessity of providing space for businesses to prosper while ensuring the foundations of daily life—affordable housing and quality jobs—remain accessible to all.
“We want a Europe that makes it easier for us all,” Metsola said. “A Europe that simplifies, supports, and clears away the obstacles, giving us the space to grow and compete.”
The EP president spoke about the importance of intergenerational fairness, where younger generations have the tools to carry the EU forward and the elderly are honoured for their work to build the EU’s current foundations.
She called for a union that cherishes equality of opportunity with increased efforts to ensure a level playing field for every citizen.
Metsola also praised the spirit of European solidarity, citing the courage of firefighters and emergency workers who cross borders to support neighbouring nations in times of crisis. “They represent the true personification of European values,” she added.
While acknowledging the need for peace of mind, the president focused on a Europe that is “larger, reformed, and faster”, building solid partnerships with global allies and opening doors to those ready to join the union.
