AD salutes birth of post-Gaddafi Libya, augurs end of other brutal regimes

Alternattiva Demokratika welcomed developments within the Libyan revolution, which is propelling the country towards apost-Gaddafi era.

AD chairperson Michael Briguglio described the ingoing celebrations of freedom of Libyan people in the streets of Tripoli as “a true symbol of what making history is all about.”

The Libyan opposition, he said, with the aid of the international community has finally got rid of the brutal Gaddafi regime. “We augur that other brutal dictatorships are done away with”.

AD spokesperson on EU and International Affairs Prof. Arnold Cassola also welcomed the developments. "We salute and congratulate the Libyan people who overthrew the regime led by a ruthless tyrant.”

He however said it is now imperative that the transitional government ensures that there are no reprisals or vindictive actions by the winning faction.

“The new Libya should be built on the concept of respect of basic human rights as well as the rights of all minorities,” he said. “The rule of law is to be the guiding light of the new Libya".

AD spokesperson for Citizenship and Migration Robert Callus also called on the EU to “assist in the democratic process as well as pressure the new leaders to ratify the Geneva Convention for Refugees like all other democratic countries have done, as well as allowing the UNHCR to operate once again in Libya.”

“While the West couldn't dictate what type of democracy the new Libya will have, it is imperative that that the most fundamental human rights are respected," Callus said.
