Boat owners no longer need to remove vessels from AUM water space
Momentum urged that the full details of the agreement reportedly reached between Bedingfield, the government and AUM be made public
Boat owners moored in front of the American University of Malta (AUM) campus in Cospicua will be allowed to keep their vessels there following an agreement with the university.
Parliamentary Secretary Glenn Bedingfield said that a deal had been reached with AUM and that owners would be updated on any further developments.
Earlier this month, the boat owners were told that their vessels must be removed from the space by 28 February, as the area was the university’s “private water space.”
In response to Tuesday’s news, Momentum noted that while the announcement may temporarily reassure owners, it raises concerns. The party called on AUM’s rector to specify which clause in the government concession deed allows the university to lease or control berths adjacent to its campus.
Momentum urged that the full details of the agreement reportedly reached between Bedingfield, the government and AUM be made public. It maintained that any new arrangement involving berthing rights should be presented in parliament and asked the Auditor General to examine whether the original concession terms are being upheld.
