Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson Michael Briguglio called for resignation of Malta Environment and Planning Authority board members should the proposed development of Portomaso is approved.

“If the MEPA board approves development against its own previous approvals, the board members should resign. The proposed development at Portomaso should be refused by MEPA.

“The simple reason being that it violates the previous approved development - which in itself was controversial – and should be enough for the MEPA board to immediately turn down the application. The proposed development will result in further construction on the coast in an overdeveloped area,” Briguglio said.

A report by MEPA’s Environment Protection Directorate, led by former Din l-Art Helwa President Petra Bianchi expressed concern regarding changes in the original permit condition to protect an “ecological zone”.

However, Bianchi also stated that following the disappearance of Wedgewood grass, the Spinola area had lost its ecological importance.

The southern ecological zone was never formally scheduled by MEPA but its conservation was one of the conditions imposed in the original MEPA permit for Portomaso.
