‘Siggiewi a clear example of the difference PN can make’ – Simon Busuttil

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil visits Siggiewi ahead of local council elections on April 11th

“The projects and work done by the Siggiewi local council are clear examples of the differences the nationalist party can make in local councils,” said opposition leader Simon Busuttil earlier today.

During a visit in Siggiewi, where the media was not invited, Busuttil visited some of the projects undertaken by the local council in recent years. Siggiewi is one of the localities that will be holding elections later on the 11th April.

Busuttil said that the council had worked very hard in its years in council in order to address the needs of the people.

According to a statement, Busuttil visited the Siggiewi Civic Centre where PN candidates would be opening the first Night Centre for the elderly in the next four years.

“The building that houses the civic centre was originally public property, but it was being used by the Labour Party as a party club,” the statement reads.

Siggiewi mayor Karol Aquilina revealed the plans for a new playground that would be built in 2016 to a cost of €160,000. The “Nalizpelra Playground”, as it would be called, would be dedicated to Maurice Tanti Burlo, an artist who has been living in Siggiewi for the past 30 years.

The mayor also reportedly spoke about a book about Siggiewi that had been published by the council and distributed to families in the locality.

According to the statement, Busuttil praised the council’s work, specifically in relation to the Salib tal-Gholja project, which would “benefit all those living in the area and even the many visitors of the area.”

“In the past year, Siggiewi saw the resurfacing and maintenance of 2,500 m of pavement and the creation of some 2,000m2 of new roads,” the statement continues. Busuttil referred to neighbouring localities like Qormi, which had a labour majority council, where a mere 200m of pavement were surfaced.

Busuttil also praised the financial situation of the council, stressing that it was one of the few councils not to have any debts whereas other localities such as Zebbug have a negative working capital of around €1.3 million.

Spokesperson for local councils David Agius, and the PN candidates in Siggiewi were also present at the event.
