Detention services officers receive first-aid certification

Some 20 detention ervices officers awarded certification for first aid courses

Some 20 detention services officers were awarded certification for first aid at their place of employment, this morning. The certificate was a result of ongoing efforts to provide workers in the detention sector with more training, and it was organized by the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps (ERRC).

“The training programme is part of a holistic programme to strengthen human resources in detention services, after they were notably lacking for a long time,” a government statement reads.

Home affairs minister Carmelo Abela said that the training was particularly important in view of the fact that irregular immigration has become more controlled in recent years.

“This humanitarian crisis is far from resolution and the authorities are continuously monitoring the way this situation is unfolding,” Abela said.

He added that the government’s first agreement with detention services had led to 160 officials being given the dignity and conditions of work they deserve.

“Every resource is being utilised as efficiently as possible,” Abela added.
