President's Office gets permit for 'refreshment area' in San Anton Palace

The President's of the Republic has been given MEPA's go-ahead to serve cakes and sandwiches during charity events.

MEPA's Development Control Commission has given the President's office the go-ahead to open a refreshment area in the kitchen gardens of San Anton, which are open to the public on special occasion, particularly for Malta Community Chest Fund activities.

The permit stipulates that the refreshment area situated in the San Anton Kitchen Gardens will  be solely used for philanthropic purposes in conjunction with activities held in San Anton Gardens.

The application was presented by senior Aide-de-camp Captain Mark Mallia.

MEPA has approved the change use of an existing store into a refreshment area with a total floor area of about 52m².

The development had the full blessing of MEPA’s Heritage Advisory Committee and the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage.

No cooking will be taking place in this area as  food items such as sandwiches or cakes will be prepared in the main kitchen of San Anton Palace. These will be transported in closed thermo container trolleys. The  site will be  enclosed with timber apertures and laminated glass. No shop sign is being proposed for the refreshment area.
