In the Press: Businesses perceive more corruption since election

81% of Maltese businesses are convinced that corruption is widespread in malta, according to a recent Eurobarometer study carried out in October 2015. The figures mark a 7% increase since the last time the survey was carried out in March 2013, when the Labour Party was elected into government. The rise in perception also puts Malta in the third highest spot in the WU with only Ireland and Cyprus rising by 10% and 8% respectively.

A government spokesperson has told the paper that advice by the Attorney general after the Audit office found irregularities in the lease of part of the General Workers Union (GWU) headquarters, has possible consequences for social housing. According to the report by the NAO, the GWU had broken conditions of its lease when it sublet its offices in Valletta to state company ARMS Ltd, travel agency Vjaggi Unitours and restaurant Sciacca Grill. If the government recognizes the report and follows through then it could effect all government owned land, including social housing.

Former Nationalist party MP Joe Cassar, is not considering running for the next general election, after he resigned his seat in Parliament on 3rd November. The paper points out that Cassar is still however, listed on Team PN; a list of the party’s MPs and MEPs and their contact details, published on the PN newspaper in- Nazzjon yesterday.

Members of the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM), have expressed their disappointment at the fact that their efforts particularly during the Valletta Summit on migration and the CHOGM meetings are not being properly recognized. The employees are lamenting the fact that these efforts have only resulted in a €100 allowance received some days ago.  The AFM go on to express indignation at this ‘inferior treatment’ by the government.

Naxxar local councillor Clifford Galea’s car was used by three people recently arraigned for using counterfeit €50 banknotes in Gozo. Galea confirmed that he had lent his car to one of the three men, but stressed he had nothing to do with the crime. The three men, Jordan Azzopardi, 26 from Iklin, Naomi Tanti, 21 from Birkirkara and Silvio Camilleri, 31 from Birkirkara were arraigned, after they allegedly made some €500 in profit from the change they were given for the false banknotes.
