Headlines today are dominated by reports about the tragic death of a motorcyclist yesterday morning. 27-year-old Johanna Boni died after the motorcycle she was riding collided with a mixer truck being driven in the same direction. The incident marks the first road fatality of the year.

Only 272 refugees have been relocated from Italy and Greece, out of a total of around 160,000. Malta has not yet taken any refugees in, although home affairs minister Carmelo Abela said that the country had made all the preparations and was waiting on the respective countries to select the individuals.

Funds deposited by the General Workers Union in court, as payment for its ground rent, has not been collected by the Lands department. Legal experts say this implies that the Lands department did not consider the payment legally correct. The GWU's rental of its property to third parties is under investigation from the NAO.

The police have busted an insurance fraud ring that saw some €400,000 defrauded from several companies between 2009 and 2013. 24 individuals will face court proceedings today.

Two boats overturned in rough weather yesterday, costing 36 refugees their lives between the Turkish coast and Greek islands. Bodies, including those of children, washed up on beaches in two Turkish towns, some 50km apart.
