PN urges Gozo Channel to resume sevices between Mġarr and Sa Maison

Nationalist Party takes issue with the government's decision to stop services between Mġarr and Sa Maison, and urges a swift solution to avoid traffic congestion to and from Cirkewwa

The Nationalist Party has urged Gozo Channel to resume its service from Mgarr in Gozo to Sa Maison, after it was suspended “out of the blue” yesterday.

In a statement the PN pointed out that the long-running service was important for trucks carrying equipment between Malta and its sister island.

“The suspension of this service essentially means that a vast number of trucks that used to undergo the trip on a weekly basis, will now have to use the Ċirkewwa harbour,” the statement reads, adding that certain roads in Xemxija and Mellieħa would as a result become busier given the increased number of trucks.

The PN further criticized the Gozo ministry, for deciding to stop this service rather than choosing to strengthen sea transport by the sea.

“In recent months, Gozo minister Anton Refalo had reassured us that a solution to the problem would be enacted in a short period of time,” the statement adds.

PN further urged the government to find a solution, in as little time as possible, for the transport of goods between Gozo and the Marsamxetto Harbour or  the Grand Harbour.

“The solution should both reduce traffic congestion towards the Cirkewwa harbour and at the same time offer the most efficient service to the people of Gozo, who are waiting for daily supplies from Malta.”
