In the Press: Gaffarena deal to be reversed, Deborah Schembri to replace Falzon

Headlines today are predominantly about the resignation of parliamentary secretary for lands Michael Falzon, after a NAO report revealed 'collusive action' between the lands department and Mark Gaffarena, the man who would make €3.4 million in cash and lands off the expropriation deal.

The 179 helpline for abuse victims, run by Appogg, is suffering a lack of volunteers and unless more are willing to volunteer their time, the service may have to be stopped altogether.

The National Auditor's Office yesterday published a report into the contentious expropriation of half a property on Old Mint Street, Valletta. Among its conclusions were that the deal was instigated by Gaffarena himself, through proposals, and these proposals were not discussed or analyzed before being accepted.

A circular issued in February 2013 informed government MPs at the time that they could buy a second ministerial car before the election the following month.

The Gaffarena expropriation deal is to be reversed, following the findings of the NAO investigation. Deborah Schembri will be replacing Michael Falzon after the latter resigned from his post as planning secretary.
