The Labour Party condemned the “hypocrisy” of PN leader Simon Busuttil after the latter cried foul over the criminal defamation charges PN MP Jason Azzopardi is facing.

In a statement, the PL said that in the year 2000, Busuttil had solicited the police to take criminal action against Emanuel Cuschieri, then president of the Labour Party.

“In fact, [Cuschieri] was summoned to court by the Police after Busuttil’s action,” the PL said, adding that Busuttil was then on the state payroll as head of a government entity and a person of trust.

“This confirms the Opposition leader’s hypocritical stance when a private citizen took a similar action against PN MP Jason Azzopardi.”

The PL added that it Busuttil’s actions were “the real attack on the opposition and democracy”, due to the position he held.

“His antics today on a private citizen’s case, who is no longer connected to the government, are only a mise-en-scène to suit the purposes of his petty partisan agenda.”
