The previous PN administration had received and rejected a similar proposal for the construction of a LNG power station that was “identical” to the government’s current deal with Electrogas, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said.

He said that he wasn’t present for the meeting, and that the offer was not tabled by the same consortium, but that he had recently received such information from “high-ranking people within the PN”.

“If the PN had such an offer then it stands to reason that Labour also had a similar offer prior to the election, which would mean that the government’s expression of interest for the construction of a power station was fake from the start,” he told a press conference at Parliament.

Busuttil was speaking after all Labour MPs voted against and hence defeated his motion of no confidence against the government.

However, he said that the Opposition tonight “won the hearts and minds of everybody who wants to live in a normal, European democratic country”.

“The Opposition MPs showed tonight that they are ready to strive towards Malta becoming a normal country. We believe that the people are intelligent enough to reach their own conclusion, and the only rational conclusion is that the current political situation is not normal.”

He urged everybody to “do their bit” for Malta to become a normal country in which tranquillity and stability reigns.

“The PN’s best weapon is the truth, and the truth will triumph eventually,” he said.
