In the Press: Pressure on EU Commission to close Malta spring hunting season

The European Commission has been urged by the Internation Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to request the closure of the spring hunting season in Malta in order to protect the European Turtle Dove. This year, despite last year's referendum, Malta has proceeded to open its spring huntign season allowing 5, 000 birds to be shot. The IUCN sent a letter to EU environment commissioner Karmenu Vella highlighting the unfavourable conservation status of the turtle dove, making hunting unsustainable.

A probe into allegations of overseas financial vehicles used for tax evasion has been expanded to include all the names of individuals and companies mentioned in the Panama Papers.  The Inland Revenue Department, the Tax Compliance Unit and the Financial Intelligence Analyses Unit have opened separate inquiries.

New details emerge on senseless alleged beatings by bouncers on a 19-year-old in Paceville. X-Rays confirmed that the teenager’s nose was broken, which gave rise to a number of new questions regarding the case. In a line up, the young man was able to identify the three bouncers who allegedly attacked him.

Along with a letter, Simon Busuttil sent General Auditor Charles Deguara a copy of a document that was passed on to the Nationalist party before the last general election, proposing the construction of a new power station. He claimed during the no-confidence motion against the government that the same document was also given to the Labour party in the same period, meaning that an agreement was reached with the Labour party even before it was elected in government.

Joseph Muscat has declared €75, 000 deposited in the bank for the second year in a row in his MP declaration of assets on 22nd March. Justice Minister Owen Bonnici has also submitted his declaration of assets, listing €1,037.38. All members of parliament are obliged to hand in their declaration of assets by 30th April.
