PL welcomes Consumer Protection Authority establishment and class action draft law
The PL welcomed the establishment of a Consumer Protection Authority, an authority long-over due after having been promised a full year ago, the party said.
In a statement, the Labour Party welcomed the establishment of the Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority, pointing out that the authority was materialising only a year after it was originally promised.
The PL also said that a Consumer Protection Authority was a proposal that the government had originally “ridiculed.”
The Labour Party also said it is looking forward to the parliamentary discussion on the bill that will regulate this authority, where the opposition would be able to make present suggestions and amendments.
The PL also said that it is currently examining what the government is proposing and will continue fashioning proposals and suggestions.
The PL added that it is also welcoming the drafting of legislation that will make it possible for class actions to be instated in Malta. It added that not only has it spoken before of this right on various occasions, but also that “similar action in the name of thousands of individuals is currently underway in the Maltese Court, so that these can be refunded undue VAT tax on vehicles purchased.”
The party pledged to presenting suggestions and working towards the introduction of concrete measures that will safeguard and strengthen consumer rights.
