Students want more work exposure, KSU tells PN leader

University students have called for increased work exposure during their studies, arguing that students were not being fully prepared to launch themselves into the world outside school benches.

Flanked by shadow education minister Therese Comodini Cachia and spokesperson for youth David Agius, PN leader Simon Busuttil welcomed the University Students’ Council at his office in Hamrun.

“The University should be preparing us for our careers, beyond the theoretical work. However, there is no bridge between the University and employment,” KSU president Stephanie Dalli said.

Acknowledging that the Carriers Convention was one way of giving students some exposure, Dalli argued that much more needed to be done.

She said that the council would continue to work to ensure that informal learning remains safeguarded.

Busuttil expressed concern that the University - “despite its strong and trustworthy management” - might not be cultivating the students’ full potential.

He went on to denounce the “considerable amount of failures” in SEC examinations.

“2,100 of 4,600 students who sat for their O-level exam in mathematics failed to achieve a pass mark,” he said, adding that students should be given further support.

Over 800 students who failed their O-level exams have applied for the free revision classes offered by the state.
