Number of domestic abuse reports on the rise
Official data that 1,446 reports of domestic abuse were filed with the police in 2016 • 1,111 of complainants were women

A total of 6,148 reports of domestic abuse were filed with the police since July 2013, including 1,446 in 2016 alone, data published in Parliament has revealed.
Responding to a question put to him by Nationalist Party MP Robert Arrigo, Home Affairs minister Carmelo Abela said that the data available was limited because it was not gathered or filed electronically.
Of the reports filed in 2016, 1,111 were filed by women and 335 by men.
Women had filed 1,034 reports in 2015 while men had filed 315.
The number of reports filed with the police has been on a gradual rise since 2014, when 886 reports were filed by women, with a further 268 filed by men.
Abela pointed out that all reports recorded were filed by men or women over 18 years of age.
No record is kept of the number of underage children or teens that report domestic abuse to the police, since their identity would only be listed as “Person filing report”.
