From steroids to pineapples: customs publishes list of confiscated items

Anabolic steroids, 26,000 canned pineapples, and 20,000 chocolate eggs were among items seized by customs official in the first quarter of 2017

The customs department has published a list of items officials from various sections around the island have confiscated in the first three months of the year – and the list is as colourful as they come.

In the first quarter of the year, customs officials seized 150 tablets and 12 bottles of anabolic steroids, 107 weapons, 300 surgical sutures, over 26,000 canned pineapples, and just under 20,000 chocolate eggs.

Customs officials also seized some 300kg of cocaine and 55,000 cigarettes, but as well as managing to intercept $50,000 in cash, 47 marine outboards, 24 security cameras, 96.45kg of various kinds of tobacco, 45 wine bottles, three alcoholic beverages, eight rolls of plastic bags, 1,400 fuel pumps, one slim card, 179.4kg of meat, poultry and dairy, 14,050 footballs, 30,660 pieces of underwear, 19,280 pieces of kids wear, 2448 bottles of shampoo, 23,552 tracksuit trousers, 39,864 pairs of sports shoes, 8,328 pairs of flip-flops, 58 auto parts, 8,470 wrist watches, 32,800 mobile phone batteries, and 150 power banks.

The customs department said the items had been seized as they were either illegal, avoiding tax, counterfeit, harmful to consumers, or prohibited.
