Updated | Truck almost flips off San Gwann overhead pass
A truck hit the side of the North-bound Regional Road overhead pass, blasting through concrete crash barriers and almost careening into the street below – disrupting traffic into and out of Paceville.
The truck, a white transportation-type vehicle, hit the side of the overhead pass connecting the tunnels leading towards Paceville from the roundabout adjacent to the San Gwann distribution centre. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Almost careening off the side of the overpass into the street below, the truck caused considerable damage to the concrete crash barriers - and was left half-hanging precariously off the overpass. The street below was showered in concrete debris.
By 8:20 am Police were already on the scene, keeping drivers away from dangerous areas at risk from falling debris from the damaged overpass.
In a statement issued later during the day, police said the truck was a Toyota Dyna that was being driven towards Bahar ic-Caghaq by a 49-year-old man from Fgura.
Police said that the driver lost control of the vehicle, hit a wall, and consequently collided with a barrier on the side of the bridge.
A 25 year old man from Valletta was a passenger in the truck. Both the driver and the passenger were taken to the Gzira Health Centre for medical attention, and were later certified to be only lightly injured.
Personnel from the Civil Protection Department were also called to the site to render assistance. Police added that the Regional Road, as well as Triq l-Imrabat were closed to traffic, but were opened again up at around noon.
