Ġgantija Temples get security equipment thanks to Vodafone Malta Foundation

This security equipment will help Heritage Malta enhance the much needed security of this historical site.

The new CCTV system installed in the Ggantija Temples will compliment traditional security, making heritage sites like Ggantija safer. This is the first time that this prime megalithic temple site is benefiting from such security.

Frank Mifsud, Acting CEO at Heritage Malta explained that this equipment will enhance security around the oldest prehistoric temples on the Maltese islands. The system will help further the onsite security officers who patrol the site round the clock. “We are thankful that Vodafone Malta Foundation gave us this opportunity and helped us invest in a new security system which is crucial for the protection and management of this World Heritage site,” emphasised Mifsud.

Gemma Mifsud Bonnici, Chairperson of the Vodafone Malta Foundation, emphasised Vodafone Malta Foundation’s commitment in supporting any historical investments which help preserve, protect and promote Malta’s history and heritage. “We have always helped out in supporting Heritage Malta in particular the Ggantija Temples project because we truly believe in preserving a World Heritage Site. We think this is a duty we have towards the present and future Maltese generations as well as foreign visitors to Malta and Gozo,” Mifsud Bonnici stated.

The CCTV system consists of six cameras placed at strategic places around the temple complex and grounds. All cameras provide real-time CCTV coverage, viewing and recoring the entire site. The system also has the capability of linking the coverage via broadband to other offices around the island.

The Ġgantija Temples are one of the most important archaeological sites in Malta and their listing on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1980 makes them of universal significance.  The Temples give priceless evidence of an advanced prehistoric civilisation flourishing on the Islands around 5,000 years ago. The Ġgantija Temples date back to between 3600 BC and 3000 BC and consist of two megalithic temples surrounded by a massive common boundary-wall.  The name of the complex is derived from the Maltese word ġgant meaning giant.
