Hospital facing 300 flu cases daily

Pressure on health authorities as flu cases total 300 daily.

A ‘wave’ of flu has spread over the islands, the health authorities said today, as some 300 cases are being admitted to the emergency department every day at Mater Dei.

The health department yesterday said it had moved 18 elderly patients from Mater Dei into private homes for the elderly under the public-private partnership.

The department encouraged the public to take precautions for the prevention of spread of flu which include frequent hand-washing and staying home if sick. “We also encourage people to seek medical assistance if they are sick, especially the vulnerable groups who are more at risk of complications.”

The public is advised to avoid crowded places, use disinfectant frequently, eat fruit and vegetables, drink a lot of water, and dispose of tissues carfully to avoid spread of the virus.

Parents are also advised not to send their children to school if they are sick.
