With heatwave Lucifer bringing temperatures as high as 37°C, the Bicycling Advocacy Group has issued a list of recommendations for cyclists to follow during their commute, including travelling lighter and opting for flatter roads to travel through.

“Pick routes that are flatter, with more shade if you can. Quite often, different parts of urban roads will be in shade at different times of the day, especially early morning and late afternoon, so work these new shady lanes into your commute,” BAG said. “Get as much [luggage] off you and onto your bike as you can. Ditch the backpack you carry your work clothes in for panniers, a saddle bag or handlebar bag.”

BAG also advised cyclists to retain the pads found within helmets, and to rinse the entire helmet, saying that this will make the pads last longer.

“Something else that also helps is a bandana under your helmet to soak up any sweat, while wetting this before you leave can keep your head cool,” BAG added.

Other more “obvious” recommendations included keeping well hydrated and drinking “twice your normal daily average during a heat wave,” as well as dressing lightly and avoiding the midday sun.

“Very few people for instance commute in the midday sun in a suit! Go in that little bit earlier and seriously consider some tech clothing that wicks sweat away,” BAG said.

Heatwave Lucifer has affected countries as far north as Poland, but has hit Italy and the Balkans the hardest. European weather hub Meteoalarm has issued its top “red” warning for 10 countries.
Malta can expect to be hit by more heatwaves during the summer months, with climate scientists warning that as a result of global warming-driven climate change, the country will experience more frequent, longer, and more intense heatwaves.
