The mother of a newborn baby that was abandoned last Friday has been identified and questioned, the police said on Sunday.

The Police confirmed that the woman is Maltese and not foreign as had been suggested by some media outlets on Friday.

The baby boy was discovered on a porch in Triq il-Korp tal-Pijunieri on Friday reportedly with its umbilical cord still attached to it.

The baby was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment and the necessary check-ups and was later confirmed to be in good health.

No signs of blood were found at the location the baby was found suggesting that the infant was probably born elsewhere.

The statement made no mention of the infant child’s father.
