Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has received an award of excellence from the Indian-European Business Forum in recognition of Malta’s economic success and his efforts to improve relations between Malta, India, Europe and the UK.

Muscat was awarded the prize during a ceremony at the House of Lords in Westminster, London.

Addressing the ceremony, Muscat insisted that Malta’s current economic situation had not happened by coincidence, but had rather been the result of the government’s plan and clear vision for the country.

Muscat said that Malta had succeeded in registering a surplus despite the government reducing taxes and increasing pensions. Children’s allowance had been increased for the first time in a number of years, the Prime Minister said.

Muscat also noted that the country’s debt had gone from 72% of GDP down to 43% in less than seven years. Malta, he said, was today practically at full-employment.

He also spoke about Malta’s efforts in the blockchain and artificial intelligence sectors.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Finance Minister Edward Scicluna, Malta's High Commissioner to the UK Joseph Cole, Brexit task force chairman Joseph Zammit Tabona, Malta Financial Services Authority CEO Joseph Cuschieri, Chief of Staff Keith Schembri and head of communications Kurt Farrugia.
