Several residents of Gzira have banded together to form a pressure group called ‘Inhobbu l-Gzira’, the aim of which is to oppose the Midi masterplan for Manoel Island.

The plan includes the transformation of a large part of the seaside promenade into a bridge to Manoel Island.

"Families from Gzira and from further afield enjoy the seaside atmosphere making use of the public benches to relax from the heat of the day and to enjoy the cool breeze from over the water. A large part of Gzira promenade is proposed for elimination. 40% of the public benches will be lost," a spokesperson for the group said.

The group said that views across Marsamxett Harbour will also be lost, covered by two apartment blocks that are due to be built on the right opposite Triq ix-Xatt.

"Not only is the sea channel being halved, but these blocks will also rise to 29.75m above sea level blocking all views of the Valletta skyline, the bastions, views of Pieta and even Ta’ Xbiex. The views are a valuable public good. They belong to every one of us."

Inhobbu l-Gzira was established on the 27 December, by three core members. The group is currently going door to door to inform residents in Gzira of the proposed plan, and also to collect signatures to gain support for the group.

The group said that while its current focus was on the Manoel Island development, it planned to serve as a safeguard against over development in Gzira.
