Football fan group posts photos of weeds growing out of national stadium seats

The football national team supporters group, South End Core, has stressed the need for ‘serious maintenance’ at the Ta' Qali Stadium and called on the responsible authorities to take action

Weeds and flowers are growing out of spectator seats in the North Stand at the Ta' Qali National Stadium, revealing the sorry state the football ground is in.

Photos of the seats were uploaded online by he national team supporters group South End Core. The fan group appealed to the Malta Football Association to take action.

“This is one of the places that all local supporters visit week in week out and spend time in, to be able to follow their local and national football team. It is our second home,” the statement read.

South End Core leader Dillion Mercieca, told MaltaToday that infrastructural repairs were required in different parts of the stadium.

“Currently there are plans to repair the enclosure side roofing, but I believe that the Millennium, North and South Stands have to undergo serious maintenance as well,” he said.

Mercieca said any restoration works would require a joint effort between the MFA and the government to "restore the stadium to its former glory".

According to supporters who have recently visited the stadium, seats in the Millennium and South stands also require thorough cleaning.

The scoreboard indicating the match’s score line, is also malfunctioning and in need of repairs, Mercieca added.
