300 minors charged in court during 2018

A total of 30 youths appeared before the Tribunal over drug-related offences

The number of minors aged below 18 who were charged in court during 2018 stood at 301, Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia said on Monday.

The minister was replying to questions in parliament, where he was asked by Democratic Party MP Godfrey Farrugia, for the number of youths charged, and what they were charged with.

The minister noted that in addition to the 301 charged in court, a further 30 appeared before a tribunal over drug-related offences.

“The reason they were charged varies from case to case, but they included cses of threats and insults, drug possession, drug trafficking, causing both grievous and slight injuries on other persons, theft, damaging property, disturbing the peace, driving without a license, dangerous driving and other traffic related offences, disobeying public officials, misuse of technological equipment, the use of force against another person, attempted murder, arson, breaking probation conditions, possession of pornography and sexual activity with minors."
