A 23-year-old female cleaner was sexually abused at her place of work at the Mtarfa old people’s home on Sunday.

The woman was allegedly raped by a carer employed at the home.

The news was first disseminated by NET TV but a statement released on Sunday evening by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Active Ageing confirmed that the police were investigating an “alleged case of abuse”.

The statement did not elaborate but indicated that it was the Mtarfa home’s administration that filed a police report when the case came to its attention.

“The department is treating this case seriously and is giving all the necessary support to the alleged victim and will continue following developments,” the statement read.

It insisted that no such abuse will be tolerated and the home’s admininstration will be cooperating fully with the police.
