Protect citizens' quality of life by enforcing construction regulations, AD tells government

Local council candidate Daniel Desira said that if elected, he would be working to ensure the proper enforcement of regulations in order to enjoy a good quality of life

In order for citizens' quality of life to truly be protected, authorities must ensure that construction regulations and other laws are enforced, Alternattiva Demokratika siad on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference in Marsaskala, AD candidate for the Marsaskala council Daniel Desira, said that environmental protection was not only intrinsically valueble, but it also had a direct impact on the quality of life of residents.

“It is essential that there is proper enforcement of regulations during construction. It is patently obvious that enforecement is not high on the government’s agenda,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of cooperation between the government and NGOs in tackling environmental issues.

Desira also raised concerns with fish farming in the area raised by residents, stating that the impacts of smells and pollution of the sea by fish farms should be addressed.

"Marsaskala residents should be guaranteed a clean sea," he said.

If elected, he said he would be pushing for better alternative public transport routes, insisting that an efficient system was essential for residents.

Issues with smells from the Sant’Antnin waste treatment facility also needed to be tackled immediately, the AD said.

Party chairman Carmel Cacopardo also said that residents should be offered respite for the overdevelopment in Marsascala.

“The protection of residents and of ecological and historical heritage are the priorities of Greens in our localities. The quality of life of us all depends on these policies,” he said.
