European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine at the Munich Security Conference this weekend, where she joined world leaders to address pressing global security threats.

“The strategy to withstand Russian aggression is simple: We will keep pushing for peace side-by-side with Ukraine. The European Parliament remains firmly on Ukraine’s side, as we have done from day one,” President Metsola stated during a high-level panel discussion.

The Maltese MEP appeared alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and U.S. Senator Roger Wicker in a keynote panel titled “Coalition of the Able,” moderated by CNN’s Christiane Amanpour.

Looking ahead to the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion on 24th February, President Metsola confirmed she will sign a €90 billion loan package into law during a special plenary session to cover Ukraine’s immediate needs. She praised Ukraine’s progress towards EU membership, noting the country’s commitment to be ready for accession by 2027.

“Ukraine has delivered under the worst possible circumstances,” President Metsola added. “It is time for the European Union to formally open negotiations.”

President Zelenskyy thanked President Metsola for her support, stating: “And I want to especially thank those who stand with us not only in words or not only in emotions, not only in the hope for more security, but in real action, in real work, in concrete help.”

During the conference, President Metsola also participated in discussions on Middle Eastern stability and Iran, declaring: “The world is witnessing a wave of change in Iran. People on the streets will change the course of history. Now is the time to double down on our support for liberty for the people of Iran.“
