Newly-elected Mohamed Morsi is sworn into office in Egypt
Mohamed Morsi vows to protect the freedom of Egypt’s people as he is formally sworn in as the first president of Egypt not drawn from military ranks.
Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi was formally sworn in as President of Egypt yesterday and vowed to protect the freedom achieved by the hundreds who died.
Despite praising the military, Morsi also challenged them indirectly over the limited authority given to him.
Morsi, 60, said a new nation of justice and equality had been created by the uprising of the Egyptian people which resulted in the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
The newly sworn-in President became Egypt’s first democratically-elected civilian leader after a transition which span over 16 months and divided the country.
The transition created a power struggle between Morsi and the military leadership which is expected to continue.
Morsi delivered a message of change and continuation of the revolution, clearly wanting to take full power and defy the dissolution of the parliament and constitutional declaration.
