Home and offices of Former French President are raided
Nicolas Sarkozy’s home and offices are raided amid investigations into possible receipt of illegal campaign contributions made by L'Oréal cosmetics heiress.
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s home and offices were raided by the police on Tuesday during investigations into allegations of the receipt of illegal campaign contributions.
Sarkozy was away on a family vacation during the raid according to his lawyer, Thierry Herzog, who added that the investigation was mostly focused around discovering whether the heiress of L'Oréal cosmetics, Lilian Bettencourt, had illegally assisted Sarkozy in 2007.
After losing presidential re-election, Sarkozy was exposed to potential prosecution following questions raised regarding Bettencourt’s finances amid a family dispute in 2011.
Investigators were looking into allegations of secret and possible illegal payments made to French politicians including Sarkozy, his former labour minister and members of his Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) party.
